Our mission
Our mission
Filling the gap between capable, motivated professionals and companies short of people and know-how.
Mission
Our mission
As a consequence of continuous effort in self-development coupled with the personal ambition of obtaining a better career and high-level skill sets, many talented and capable candidates tend to have relatively frequent job changes and to be older. Although such candidates have the skills, experience and flexibility to quickly adapt to an employer's needs, both candidates and employers keep missing the opportunity to succeed together, constrained by employers' concerns about the candidates' background. This is a typical example of the Theory of Constraints, which Dr. Goldratt advocated.
Under such circumstances, GOS instead sees an opportunity. We employ experienced professionals as permanent employees and provide skilled services to companies suffering from a shortage of quality staff or skill sets. Detailed instructions on how to execute tasks are not necessary, unlike the case for temporary staff. As GOS experts are not employees of the client, the client can use our service flexibly for all levels of work at the same time — entry level, middle or even executive level — when needed. The duration is also flexible.
By creating such a new business model, we contribute to developing a flexible management system within Japanese labour practices that remain relatively rigid because of the lifetime employment culture, and consequently fill the gap between employers and job seekers. This is the mission of GOS.
The essence
The essence of the GOS Project
During my career, I was hired as a start-up CEO for the newly founded Japan subsidiary of a British recruitment agency. In that role I found a common gap between what the clients needed and what the candidates wanted, after interviewing over 1,000 candidates and over 100 clients.
As a consequence of continuous effort in self-development coupled with the personal ambition of obtaining a better career and high-level skill sets, many talented and capable candidates tend to have relatively frequent job changes. Although such candidates are not necessarily so-called "job hoppers" who change jobs easily and show little patience, it is not easy to distinguish quality candidates among all frequent job changers. It therefore becomes more difficult over time for a quality candidate with vast experience, high-level skills and a wider outlook to find a suitable opportunity, as they are passed over by employers. It is often the case that such a candidate has to settle for non-permanent employment and a lower salary for the same or even higher level of work than regular employees.
Many capable people suffer from the gap between their talent and motivation on one side, and their working opportunities on the other. It is unfortunate for both individuals and companies, and a real loss for society.
The recruitment firm I helped launch in Japan withdrew in 2008, triggered by the Lehman shock. In that year I founded Watase Corporation, the predecessor and parent company of GOS. Since then I have worked on how to fill the gap I had seen as a recruitment agent. Setting up a volunteer organisation or an NPO was a possible option, but I held a strong belief that the best way to lead more people to success is to build and successfully operate a new business model. The answer is the GOS Project.
Generally, the ideal attributes of a candidate for an employer, regardless of the position, are:
- Highly skilled and motivated
- Good personality
- Young
- Low salary
- A clean CV with few job changes
It is quite hard to fill the gap between employers' expectations and experienced candidates' attributes. On the other hand, the proportion of "ideal" candidates continues to decrease in line with the declining birth rate and the ageing population. Consequently, companies always suffer from a shortage of quality labour.
Under such circumstances, what if someone experienced took on a position, a role or a whole section from outside, as a team? GOS employs experienced professionals as permanent employees and provides skilled services to companies short of quality staff or skills. Detailed instructions on how to execute tasks are not necessary, unlike the case for temporary staff. As GOS experts are not employees of the client, our service can be used flexibly for all levels of work at the same time, and the duration is flexible.
A diversified working history with frequent job changes tends to make some employers reluctant. Conversely, it creates a strong advantage: a highly adaptable workforce that can match diverse corporate cultures and working environments. In addition, GOS experts can work with pride, holding stable employment and being respected as professionals. By creating such a new business model, we contribute to a more flexible management system within Japanese labour practices and consequently fill the gap between employers and job seekers. This is the real aim of the GOS Project.
